SELEBI PHIKWE WEST, MP DITHAPELO KEORAPETSE DECRIES CORPORATE TAX INEFFICIENCY IN BOTSWANA

Member of Parliament for Selebi Phikwe West, Dithapelo Keorapetse has decried the inefficiency and ineffectiveness in tax collection from corporations in Botswana, saying they pay very low taxes compared to what corporations pay in other countries in the region. Speaking in parliament yesterday, he indicated that he was not satisfied with Finance Minister, Peggy Serame’s answer that maintaining a low rate of corporate income tax is intended to maintain the country’s competitiveness for investment. Keorapetse said the reasoning on ease of doing business must be rejected because Botswana attracts low Foreign Direct Investment despite low corporate taxes. He had asked the Minister why corporate income tax cannot be raised from 22% to 30%.
