BERA REJECTS 5% ELECTRICITY TARIFF INCREASE

Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has decided not to grant power utility BPC a tariff increase. Last year BPC requested a tariff hike of 5 percent for 2022, and BERA considered the request and engaged its stakeholders on the development. BERA Public Relations Officer, Tshepang Monare, told YaronaFM news that after careful consideration the authority decided not to go ahead with the increase. BPC had requested multiple increases over a period of three years, starting with 5 percent in 2021 where they were granted a 3 percent hike. A subsequent 5 percent for 2022 and 3 percent for 2023 were also requested. BPC may yet approach the regulator to make new tariffs increases going forward.
