The Botswana Alcohol Industry Association, BAIA says it is evident from the continuing rise in COVID infections that alcohol is not a major contributor to covid-19 cases. The KBL yesterday lost a case at the Gaborone High Court where it sought to overturn an indefinite ban on the sale of alcohol on the basis that it was not urgent. Speaking on the backdrop of the case, the Head of the BAIA Secretariat Jacob Sesinyi, said government must base decisions such as the alcohol sales ban on scientific evidence. Sesinyi said regardless of when the ban will be lifted, many bottle stores will not be able to re-open, adding that many employees within the industry are on half salary’s and that foreign alcohol businesses may also pack up and leave. However, The Head of Secretariat advised the industry to respect the court’s decision not to treat the KBL case as urgent.
