The Botswana Entertainment Promoters Association has been lobbying members of the parliamentary committee on Youth, Sport and Culture, to support its appeal to the government for the safe opening of the entertainment industry.
The sector is one of the hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and while some sectors are slowly opening up, music festivals are still outlawed under Covid-19 regulations.Promoters are concerned by the government’s tone-deaf approach to supporting creatives. They argue the country could copy what other countries are doing and partially re-open the entertainment sector to help revive economic activity.
BEPA secretary general, Sidney Nzala, told the parliamentary committee today that they would like to host a test event.According to a 2018 BIDPA report, the creative sector contributes about 5 percent of the country’s GDP and employs more people than most sectors of the economy.
