Princess Marina Hospital has called on the community to bank blood for themselves when going in for operations or deliveries for expectant mothers.
The Principal Registered Nurse in the Autologous Blood Transfusion Department Kelebogile Molatlhegi, says this is necessary because there has been a rise in hemorrhaging for birthing mothers while many patients going in for operations also need blood transfusions.
Statistics Botswana has previously reported that between 2015 to 2019 there has been an increase in martenal deaths with post partum haemorrhage as a leading cause of death. Molatlhegi has therefore called on patients to pre-empt that they may need blood by banking blood for themselves for planned operations.
Currently there is shortage of blood in the country. She says failure to do so causes delays such as some operations are then postponed, while for expectant mothers, many end up requiring hospitalization in cases of severe loss of blood during delivery.
