A heated debate is anticipated at a session of the North West District Council today in Maun, as councillors are due to discuss a request to acquire land in the Okavango Delta by the state. Recently Land Management, Water and Sanitation services, Kefentse Mzwinila notified the council of the intention by the President to get just over 22 000 hectares in the delta.
In the notice, Minister Mzwinila said the President, exercising his powers under Section 32 of the Tribal land Act, has determined that it is in the public interest for the state to acquire a portion of land in the Delta. But Bojanala Ward councillor Luke Motaleselelo will have none of it. He says the minister has to explain what he means by public interest.
