Deputy Coordinator of the Covid-19 Task Force team Professor Mosepele Mosepele says COVID-19 infections amongst young people aged between 10 and 20 years old have gone up.
Speaking during a COVID-19 update last night, Professor Mosepele said the team is not sure as to why infections have gone up amongst these age groups. There have been recent reports circulating on social media that students have been deliberately contracting COVID-19 so that they can be on isolation and rest. Professor Mosepele said team cannot confirm the allegations as they have not done any research as to why Covid-19 cases are going up amongst the age group or whether it can be attributed to the change in the virus.
He said COVID-19 cases continue to grow in the country, death toll has also increased to 926 as of June 11th. Professor Mosepele said that the surge in COVID-19 related deaths was an indication that the COVID-19 caseload has increased and could burden the society. The total local COVID-19 caseload in the country has gone up to 61 457, With 56 798 recoveries while active cases are at 3730.
