Prisons authorities have announced the hanging of Phemelo Botogeleng of Lesenepole. The 34 year-old was executed this morning at Gaborone Central Prison after he was sentenced to death by the Francistown High Court for two counts of murder.
Botogeleng killed his girlfriend Annah Simon and his child Atang Simon in May 2011 at Sesarweng lands. His appeal was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in February 2021.
The latest execution is set to re-ignite calls from international organisations such as United Nations and European Union, for Botswana to put a moratorium on the capital punishment, with a view to its abolition.
During Botswana’s Universal Periodic Review in 2018, recommendations were made urging Botswana to abolish the death penalty including taking active steps to ensure that public consultations on the abolition of the death penalty are held. But public opinion in Botswana appears to favour preserving the status quo.
