The ministry of Agriculture and food security is on alert for a locust outbreak which is currently affecting neighboring countries Namibia and Zambia among others in the South of the continent. Chief Plant Protection Officer Wilhelmina Pelokgale said the ministry last week received a report from its Namibian counterparts indicating that the locusts are on the move and threaten to affect Botswana, especially in the North East. Pelokgakle said Botswana had been battling the locusts early this year, with some success, however adding that teams are still stationed in key areas of concern to counter emerging threats. She added that the locust causes major damage on farms, with total destruction of crops sometimes taking just 10 seconds.
