The government intends to review the mines and minerals act to introduce stiff penalties as a way of fighting illegal sand mining.Minister for Mineral Resources, Green Technology & Energy Security, Lefoko Moagi when responding to questions in the Ntlo ya dikgosi, said most sand is being mined illegally in the greater Gaborone area and that illegal miners do this, owing to the light penalties.
Moagi was responding to a question from Thamaga Region Kgosi Gobuamang Gobuamng who wanted to know if government is considering increasing penalties of offences related to illegal mining of sand. Moagi further told Ntlo ya Dikgosi that residents using donkey carts and small vans will not be prohibited from mining sand in their localities.
