The Commissioner of the Botswana Police Service, Keabetswe Makgophe says the Police service has been compromised by diverging manpower resources to manage traffic control! Makgophe says the diversion of some of the resources of the BPS, to perform duties which are not its core mandate, compromise its ability to ensure that there is full compliance to road traffic laws.
Appearing before the Parliament Public Accounts Committee yesterday, Makgophe cited the traffic control at road junctions by police officers as one of the duties where the BPS dedicates a lot of its manpower, which would have been utilized in performing its core mandate of ensuring road traffic laws are observed.
The city of Gaborone currently looks like an active construction site as most roads are under maintenance. Most traffic lights are out of commission and in many cases, motorists require the assistance of the traffic police to drive around the city.
