Ministry of Agriculture says there is an outbreak of Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) in the Chobe region, following an outbreak in the SADC region.
EUS is a disease of freshwater and brackish water fish.
Chief Scientific Officer; Aquatic Animals Shaft Nengu said, a report they received today indicates that around 10 000 fish have died as a result of the disease.
The syndrome has affected Botswana in the past, prompting surveillance for the virus at least twice a year as a response.
However, Nengu said given that EUS has already hit, they will be working on containing it where it currently is.
He added that the likely impact of the current outbreak is expected to be high fish mortalities and loss of income for fishermen in the area
